Importance of modeling on E.Q and I.Q.
Modeling has its own advantages and disadvantages to both adults and Kids in terms of Mental and Emotional development. Today we dig in a little bit to analyze the psychological aspect modeling has on Emotional Quotient/Intelligence (E.Q) and Intelligent Quotient (I.Q).
Emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Huh! Some crary queens language in play there. Usually known as EQ. On the other hand Intelligence Quotient is a total score derived from one of several standardized tests designed to asses human intelligence commonly known as I.Q.
Under Emotional intelligence, a model is usually taught to be aware of themselves in terms of how they dress, walk, eat and talk. It is weird in the first instances but gradually it becomes one’s way of day to day life.
When it comes to expressing self, models are known to be good in that. There is a subsequent rise in self-esteem as one grows more confident. That is why many ladies will either shy away from a male model or be extremely attracted. Allow me to bisect this notion from my own perspective in relation to the law of attraction. You see, ladies are attracted to money, power, intelligence and maybe looks (subject to discussion)…considering the exposure we as first time male models are subjected to during ‘Dinner Wear’, we gradually learn to be ‘gentlemen’ which can simply be said to be a man who knows a woman’s feelings in this context although the Oxford Dictionary definition of a gentleman is ‘A well-mannered and considerate man with high standards of proper behavior’. On that note, many ladies will gradually be attracted to such a man. On the other hand, some ladies are very cautious of ‘smooth talkers’ and treat them as ‘players’ hence tend to shy off.
So the more aware you are of yourself as a person could be termed as if you have high emotional intelligence. Many models attend so many auditions and the rejections and missing out on opportunities that they deem ‘life changing’ tends to strengthen them emotionally. You know It is the damage that shapes you as a person because how you deal with it shapes the ‘tomorrow you’. On a positive note, if you win Mr. Kenya at 20 years, the responsibility makes you mature up to be able to cope with such a title.
IQ on the other hand is, the Intelligence Quotient which is a total score derived from one of several standardized tests designed to asses human intelligence. Modeling training also has its own tests but they differ with respective choreographers. Many authors have written on IQ so we could mention a few relevant ones with some examples.
Binet Simon test focuses on verbal abilities. Tests items vary from being based on abstract reasoning problems to concentrating on general knowledge. To those who have participated in pageants and competition are aware of the Questions and Answer section popularly known as ‘Q&A’.
If broken down, this is known as Crystallized intelligence and it includes breadth and depth of a person’s acquired knowledge, the ability to communicate one’s knowledge and the ability to reason using previously learned experiences.
Most contestants usually find themselves between a rock and hard place when it comes to expressing themselves. I was a victim once. The inability to show your patriotism for the country to simply saying why ‘Barrack Obama’ is your role model could cost you the crown.
The Hypothesis of Francis Galton on physical traits also highlights the effect of modeling on individual’s IQ. A female model has a size she needs to maintain in order to beat the selection. Pressure is mostly on females here in Africa but abroad, all the sexes are subjected to same injection. There are instances when you receive a mail or text detailing that you must have a ‘chiseled’ body. Automatically you must hit the gym, cut down on Carbohydrates and make cardio your second name. The ability and process of playing around to fit the bill for the show or product shoot gradually takes toll on your EQ and IQ. It improves you generally as a person. Under this hypothesis, walking and turns could be part of the physical traits and body co-ordination.
Next time you have a competition or know a brother who has a sister taking part in a competition, send them a link of this blog post. You may help someone win a life changing title.
